OpenAI has said that ChatGPT has over 100 million weekly active users, and has been considered one of the fastest-growing consumer products in history since its initial launch in November 2022. OpenAI’s four-day boardroom drama a year later, in which cofounder and CEO Sam Altman was fired and then reinstated, hardly seems to have slowed it down.

Although Bard hasn’t officially replaced Google Assistant, it’s a far more powerful AI assistant. After rebranding to Gemini, Google introduced a paid tier in addition to the free web application. For $20/month, users get access to the Gemini Advanced option, which runs on Gemini Ultra — a more capable version of the Gemini language models. Gemini is also getting more prominent positioning among Google’s services. It will have its own app on Android phones, and on Apple mobile devices Gemini will be baked into the primary Google app. Beyond our own products, we think it’s important to make it easy, safe and scalable for others to benefit from these advances by building on top of our best models.

In addition, researchers have found that AI language models often train on the data submitted to them. The purpose of this is for the AI chatbot to “learn” how to better serve the user, but this can also result in AI chatbots sharing the information submitted by one users in its conversations with other users. OpenAI, the creator of the popular ChatGPT, also tells users on its website that it ” may use the data you provide us to improve our models.” Both Google Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT are AI chatbots, meaning they are designed for interaction with people through the use of natural language models and machine learning.

Both Google Bard and ChatGPT use natural language models and machine learning to create their chatbots, but each has a different set of features. At the time of writing, ChatGPT is entirely based on data that was mostly collected up until 2021, whereas Google Bard has the potential to use up-to-date information for its responses and can freely search the internet when asked. AI training is an endless, compute-intensive process since there is always new information to learn. Bard also integrated with a number of Google apps and services, including YouTube, Maps, Hotels, Flights, Gmail, Docs and Drive, letting users apply Bard to their personal content. Now, our newest AI technologies — like LaMDA, PaLM, Imagen and MusicLM — are building on this, creating entirely new ways to engage with information, from language and images to video and audio.

Firefly, as it’s called, is Adobe’s text-to-image generative tool that’s being introduced in a variety of Adobe’s creative applications, starting with Adobe Express. Firefly is trained on the company’s own stock image library to get around the ethical and legal problem of image accreditation. Like all of Google’s products, it’ll require you to log in with your Google account. You’ll also need to agree to the terms of service, but once you click through, you’ll rather quickly be able to start using Google Bard. Like ChatGPT, Bard is mostly just an empty text field, which says “Enter a prompt here.” Type in your prompt or question, and Bard will provide an answer.

Last week OpenAI announced an improved version of the language model behind ChatGPT, called GPT-4. Google announced that it would make a powerful language model of its own, called PaLM, available for others to use via an API, and add text generation features to Google Worksplace, its business software. In February, shortly after investing $10 billion into ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI, Microsoft launched a conversational interface to its search engine Bing using the technology. The fast-tracking of Bard shows how the excitement and hype around ChatGPT has jolted the company into taking more risks. Over the weekend users of Microsoft’s Bing search engine claimed to have seen a preview of the product in which they could ask it questions of up to 1,000 characters, with the answers also citing sources.

In 2018, Google ended its project to use its AI tech in military weapons in response to employee backlash, per the Journal. If you don’t believe me, then take it from Google, one of the biggest proponents of AI and the creator of its own AI chatbot, Bard. The results showed that most of the mock patients preferred chatting to AMIE compared to real doctors across the 149 case scenarios tested in the trial. The participants said the AI chatbot was better at understanding their concerns, and was more empathetic, clear, and professional in replies. That’s not too surprising given that an AI chatbot’s persona and tone can be programmed so that they behave more consistently and without pesky human problems like being tired or distracted. The patients didn’t know whether they were conversing with AMIE or a real physician. They were asked to rate the quality of their interactions, not knowing whether they had chatted with an AI chatbot or a human.
